Week 38 - Even If

This song resonates with many Christians around the world – myself included.  It is a very important reminder to all Christians, that God is with us … that He is before us, after us, above us, below us, beside us, in front of us, behind us, and even inside us.  And as He promised us – through His disciples – He will never leave, nor forsake us.

Bart Millard – the lead singer of the group MercyMe – said this about the song: “This song is the reason that we are in ministry.  The reason that we do this, is to reach people where they are; and this is that song for us.”

He continued: “We have all had bad days – I’ve had awful days with a child with a chronic illness.  And I just realized that there are times when I would say, ‘I just can’t do this anymore.’  And I want to be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednago that said, ‘I know that God will deliver me, but if He doesn’t, I’m still not going to bow – I will still worship Him – He is still worthy to be praised.’  I want to be that guy.  And that’s what this song talks about.”

He concluded: “I know what He is capable of, but if He even if He doesn’t come through, He is still my hope because of what He has already done.  Not what these circumstances are doing to me … that’s not going to change what Christ has done for me long before this.  If nothing else, He’s the One who has prepared me for the circumstance.”

The lyrics of the song are:
“They say sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose some.  And right now, right now I'm losing bad.  I've stood on this stage night after night, reminding the broken it'll be alright.  But right now, oh right now I just can't.  It's easy to sing, when there's nothing to bring me down.  But what will I say, when I'm held to the flame, like I am right now.”

“I know You're able and I know You can, save through the fire with Your mighty hand.  But even if You don't, my hope is You alone.”

“They say it only takes a little faith to move a mountain.  Well good thing, a little faith is all I have, right now.  But God, when You choose to leave mountains unmovable.  Oh give me the strength to be able to sing, ‘It is well with my soul.’”

“I know You're able and I know You can, save through the fire with Your mighty hand.  But even if You don't, my hope is You alone.  I know the sorrow, and I know the hurt, would all go away if You'd just say the Word.  But even if You don't, my hope is You alone.”

“You've been faithful, You've been good, all of my days.  Jesus, I will cling to You, come what may.  'Cause I know You're able.  I know You can.  I know You're able and I know You can, save through the fire with Your mighty hand.  But even if You don't, my hope is You alone.”

“I know the sorrow, I know the hurt, would all go away if You'd just say the Word.  But even if You don't. My hope is You alone.  It is well with my soul.  It is well, it is well with my soul.”

Since Millard’s explanation is good enough – and the song’s lyrics speak for themselves – I will just add my short two cents.

Jesus is strong to save us from every single bad thing.  But that doesn’t mean that He WILL deliver us.  We don’t understand why bad things happen, but we do know that God uses all things – good and bad – for the good of those who believe in Him.

It is very important to know, that if God has NOT delivered you from whatever you are praying to Him to deliver you from, that means He wants you in the middle of it.

You may not understand WHY, but you can rest assured that HE IS WITH YOU in the storm and in the fire.  He will never leave you, nor forsake you.

He values your prayers.  So, give thanks to Him for all He has done for you, EVEN IF Jesus doesn’t deliver you from the afflictions of this life.  He is worthy of all our praise.

Soli Deo Gloria!
