Week 37 - Peace Be Still

Hope Darst has a wonderful voice in this memorable song.  Now, I do have to point out that this song does not actually mention God or Jesus by name.  However, she is clearly singing about a deity, and because we know that Darst confesses her faith in Jesus Christ, we can safely assume that the “You” she is singing about in this song is the One True God of the Christian faith.

Darst said this about the development of the song: “We wrote ‘Peace Be Still’ back in a season when I was really struggling with fear, anxiety, and insecurity.  One of the co-writers, Mia Fieldes, came into the writing room the day we wrote this song, feeling like a situation in her life was falling apart.  As a result, she was fighting an all too familiar feeling of disappointment.  She said she needed to write a song about peace to combat what she was feeling that day.”

Darst continued: “Her vulnerability opened the door for me to share the anxiety and fear I was feeling in that same season.  Neither of us felt peaceful that day, but we knew God promises us peace.  So, we chose to prophetically sing God’s promise of peace over our lives, our hearts, and our minds that day.”

Verse 1:
“I don't want to be afraid, every time I face the waves.  I don't want to be afraid.  I don't want to be afraid.  I don't want to fear the storm, just because I hear it roar.  I don't want to fear the storm.  I don't want to fear the storm.”

Chorus:
“Peace be still.  Say the Word and I will set my feet upon the sea, ‘til I'm dancing in the deep.  Peace be still.  You are here so it is well.  Even when my eyes can't see, I will trust the Voice that speaks.”

Verse 2:
“I'm not gonna be afraid, 'cause these waves are only waves.  I'm not gonna be afraid.  No, I'm not gonna be afraid.  And I'm not gonna fear the storm; You are greater than its roar.  Oh, I'm not gonna fear the storm.  No, I'm not gonna fear at all.”

This song immediately reminds me about the Bible story of Jesus calming the storm that we can find in Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, and Luke 8:22-25.

In this story, Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat with His disciples, as they crossed the Sea of Galilee.  A sudden and violent storm blew up and threatened to sink the boat.  In fear, Jesus’ disciples ran to Him and found Him sleeping.  When they awoke Him, they accused Him of not caring whether they died or not.

Jesus spoke “Peace!  Be Still!” to the wind and waves – which immediately obeyed Him.  And then He asked His disciples: “Why are you so afraid?  Do you still doubt who I am?”

Which Darst sings beautifully in this first verse: “I don’t want to be afraid.  I don’t want to fear the storm.”  Jesus wants you to fix your eyes on Him, not on the storms of this life.  And in doing so, you will have His peace and will be able to be still … because then you will know that He is Lord over all things.

So, HAVE NO FEAR of life’s storms.  They will continue to come at us and try to sink our boats.  But know that JESUS IS WITH YOU, always.  And He is not asleep on His throne in heaven, He is working all things for good for those who believe in Him.

And one day, the storms of this life will cease and we will have the everlasting peace that surpasses all our understanding, with Him in heaven … forever.

Soli Deo Gloria!
