This is one of those songs that is wonderful and completely filled with God’s Truth. This awesome song sings praises to God’s wonder, beauty, majesty, and glory. The band unashamedly lays out their confession of faith in Jesus Christ’s completed work of salvation and the forgiveness of sins.
This song is a little repetitive, but – as that usually bothers me – it doesn’t bother me with this song. They do a wonderful job with this song’s melody and vocals and rhythm, keeping the listener entertained the whole time.
Because it’s repetitive, I only included each verse and chorus once.
Verse 1:
“I see the work of Your hands; galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance. Oh God, all that You are is so overwhelming.”
When I hear this verse, the Bible verses that come to mind are:
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1 ESV)
“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!” (1 Kings 8:27 ESV)
Verse 2:
“If I hear the sound of Your Voice; all at once it's a gentle and thundering noise. Oh God, all that You are is so overwhelming.”
This reminds me of when the Lord spoke to Elijah in 1 Kings 19:9-18 and told him to call Elisha. God was not in the great and destructive wind; He was not in the earthquake; and He was not in the fire. The Lord was in the whisper that followed all that.
Chorus:
“I delight myself in You, captivated by Your beauty (line changes in subsequent choruses to: “in the glory of Your presence”). I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You. And God I run into Your arms, unashamed because of mercy. I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You.”
Some Bible verses that go well with the chorus are:
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4 ESV)
“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4 ESV)
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 ESV)
Verse 3:
“I know the power of Your Cross; forgiven and free, forever You'll be my God. And all that You've done, is so overwhelming.”
Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection from the dead are truly overwhelming. He overwhelmingly defeated all sin, death, and the devil in His completed work of salvation. I – and many others – will forever be grateful for His willful sacrifice to forgive me for all the wrong I’ve done. I look forward to praising His name forever – starting here on earth and for all eternity.
“Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:22-23 ESV)
(Chorus repeats)
Bridge:
“You are beautiful, You are beautiful; Oh God, there is no one more beautiful. You are beautiful, God, You are the most beautiful. You are wonderful, You are wonderful; Oh God, there is no one more wonderful. You are wonderful, God, You are the most wonderful. You are glorious, You are glorious; Oh God, there is no one more glorious. You are glorious, God, You are the most glorious.”
God is truly the most beautiful, wonderful, and glorious. I think most of Scripture speaks to these qualities of our amazing God. So, instead of spending all day writing them all out, here’s one verse that I think captures what the band is saying:
“There is none like You, O Lord; You are great, and Your name is great in might.” (Jeremiah 10:6 ESV)
(Chorus repeats)
Now, to finish this analysis out, I wanted to say what my first thoughts were as I was listening to this song. I first thought of the great prophet Elijah and how he was constantly overwhelmed by God’s greatness, love, grace, and mercy.
After Elijah predicted the 3.5 year long drought to King Ahab, the Lord told him to hide next to the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan River. That way, Elijah could drink its waters to survive. But the Lord didn’t stop there, He sent RAVENS with bread and meat to feed Elijah every morning and evening – RAVENS (1 Kings 17:1-7).
Then the Lord sent Elijah to the Widow of Zarephath where He replenished her jar of flour and jug of oil every single day until He sent rain again (1 Kings 17:8-16).
Then God proved that Baal is a false god through His servant Elijah. None of the 450 Baal prophets could summon fire to sacrifice their bull. The whole time, Elijah mocked and made fun of them, unsurprisingly with no repercussions from Baal. Then, Elijah repaired the Lord’s altar with 12 stones, placed the wood and cut up bull on top, dug a trench around the altar, and had the people pour 12 jars of water over it all until the trench was filled. Then God’s holy fire consumed everything, including the stones that made the altar. And Elijah had the people seize the false prophets and killed them.
Then, when Elijah was fleeing Queen Jezebel – who wanted to kill him – he laid under a broom tree to sleep, after complaining that he should probably just die. When he woke up, the Lord gave him a cake and jar of water that fueled him for 40 days and 40 nights.
And at last, Elijah – and by default, Elisha – were overwhelmed by God’s awesome glory when they were separated by chariots and horses of fire and Elijah was taken to heaven in a whirlwind.
Soli Deo Gloria!
