The band “We Are Messengers” formed in 2015 in Monaghan, Ireland. The lead vocalist is Darren Mulligan. This song features fellow Christian artist, Josh Baldwin. This song is rich in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ and speaks to who God is: loving, present, almighty, everlasting, and holy.
The song starts off by reminding me of the story of the prodigal son found in Luke 15:11-32. Our God is truly an ever-present help in our time of need – whether we know that we need His help or not.
Even if we try to outrun His love for us, remember that He already stepped down from heaven to become one of us, all so that He could die on the cross in our place for the forgiveness of our sins. And He did this out of His love for us.
The second verse of the song is also deep. The narrow pathway to heaven is the belief in Jesus as your Lord and Savior. On each side of that pathway is an abyss that leads only to spiritual death. On one side, is the abyss of self-righteousness and believing in our own works towards salvation. On the other side, is the abyss of despair and believing that Jesus’ death and resurrection cannot overcome your sins.
But you see, when we are in despair and “when heaven seems beyond [our] reach,” just remember that Jesus’ love for you outweighs any and every sin that you have committed. There is no sin too great that His love for you wouldn’t erase it through His death on the cross.
Moreso, God is a God of Creation. He loves to create things. If you don’t believe me, just look around you or put something under a microscope. You can’t tell me that there is not a God who loves you and wonderfully made you. After all, as the song says, God “turns ashes into art” as a reference to God making us from dust and shaping us into His image.
Now, the chorus is where this song takes the cake, so-to-speak.
The chorus lyrics are:
“It's in the empty tomb. It's on the rugged cross. Your death-defying love, is written in Your scars. You'll never quit on me. You'll always hold my heart. ‘Cause that's the kind of God You are.”
The foundation of Christianity can be boiled down to 5 events surrounding Jesus Christ: 1) Jesus’ incarnation/birth, 2) Jesus’ death on the cross, 3) Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, 4) Jesus’ ascension back to heaven, and 5) Jesus’ sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and beyond.
Jesus’ death-defying love is truly written in the scars that He wears as trophies of victory over sin, death, and the devil. And Jesus told us in Matthew 28:20b (ESV): “Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” That means that He will never leave you, never forsake you, and never give up on you. Ever. Because He is God – and GOD IS LOVE.
In His death and resurrection, Jesus truly gave us freedom from our sin. We are to daily drown our sinful flesh in the waters of our baptism, take up our crosses, crucify our sinful desires on it, and hold fast to the realization that God has claimed us as His own. He has marked all believers with His name and adopted us all into His holy family as His very own sons and daughters. That is truly Amazing Grace!
The bridge of the song is:
“You are Holy, Holy, Holy; high and set apart. You are Holy, Holy, Holy; God, that's who You are. You are Holy, Holy, Holy; high and set apart. Holy, Holy, Holy; God that's who You are.”
This is a great way to start the ending to this song. To quote Revelation 4:8b (ESV): “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
Come, Lord Jesus, come!
Soli Deo Gloria!
