Week 28 - Hymn of Heaven

This song by Phil Wickham was released in February 2022.  This song was released as the world started to reemerge from the Covid pandemic.  It is a song about all believers looking beyond the grave to life eternal with God in heaven, which I think brought peace and comfort to many during this time.

This song is heavily supported by Scripture.  And while not all prayers are prayed in desperation – like prayers of thanksgiving – in times like pandemics and social unrest, people are much more scared.  And it is good in these difficult times especially, to turn to God in prayer.

God wants us to, even in our desperation.  He hears our prayers and He is still at work in this world.  Put your faith and trust in Him and He will give you His peace, as He has promised us.

I look forward to the day when I will be reunited with my loved ones who preceded me to heaven.  When I will get to join them in singing praises to my Lord and my God.  On that day, all pain and suffering will disappear and He will wipe away every tear from our eyes, permanently.

Eternal life was only made possible through Jesus Christ’s suffering and death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.  Thanks be to God!  Believe in Him and turn away from your sins to be saved.

Now, there are so many Scriptural references that could support this song, that I’ll run out of time looking them all up for this analysis.  So instead, I’m going to just look at Wickham’s chorus for Scriptural references.

The lyrics for the chorus are:
“There will be a day when all will bow before Him.There will be a day when death will be no more.Standing face to face with He who died and rose again.Holy, holy is the Lord.”

Line one of the chorus could be in reference to Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV): “Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Line two of the chorus could be in reference to Revelation 20:14 (ESV): “Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.  This is the second death, the lake of fire.”  The “second death” spoken here is after everyone is resurrected.  “Just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27 ESV).

You see, all of us must die, and everyone will be resurrected on the Last Day – Judgment Day.  The righteous will be separated from the wicked.  And the righteous will be taken to heaven and the wicked will die a second death and be cast into the fires of hell.

Line three of the chorus could be in reference to 1 Corinthians 13:12 (ESV): “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”  This verse is part of the chapter of the book of Corinthians that is speaking to “the Way of Love.”

Chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians is a beautiful chapter and I suggest you open your Bible and read this chapter.  It ends with: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13 ESV)GOD IS LOVE.

The last line of Wickham’s chorus is most definitely a reference to Revelation 4:8b (ESV): “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

God be praised for faithful, Scripturally sound Christian songs that bear witness to the glory of God!

Soli Deo Gloria!
