Week 26 - Counting My Blessings

Seph Schlueter is an up-and-coming Christian singer and songwriter.  When this song was born, he said that he was talking with some friends about life.  And at some point, they realized they were living the answer to their prayers that they had prayed years ago.

Schlueter said: “It’s so easy to move on to the next big thing, the next big dream, the next goal.  And those are amazing things, but we actually just need to pause for a moment and take a second to just thank the Lord for the blessings in our lives.”

Schlueter concluded: “There is actually so many amazing things that God has done in our lives and so many reasons to give thanks.  And so, we wanted to write a song about that to encourage the body of Christ to always give gratitude, give thanksgiving, and give praise to God for all the blessings that He has poured into our lives.”

I love the lyrics to the chorus:
“One, two, three; up to infinity.  I’d run out of numbers before I could thank You for everything.  God, I’m still counting my blessings; all that You’ve done in my life.  The more that I look in the details, the more of Your goodness I find.  Father, on this side of Heaven, I know that I’ll run out of time.  But I will keep counting my blessings, knowing I can’t count that high.”

What a beautiful message.  Of course, the biggest blessing that God has freely given to us, is the willful sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus Christ.  Jesus died for all our sins on the cross, in our place.

But seriously, sit down and try to actually count your blessings.  I had to stop myself and try to count mine.  Despite being a rather tough week, I still lost count from the blessings of only this past week!  If you need help counting your blessings, I can give you a few freebies to get you started.

First off, Jesus Christ loves you – more than He loves Himself – to the point of death on the cross.  So, if you believe that He did this for you, then you are saved from eternal damnation in hell and will get to reside with Him in heaven for all eternity.

Also, you’re reading this, so you’re clearly still alive.  Be thankful that God has blessed you with another day of life; even if you are terminally ill.  You see, we were never promised tomorrow, but we are promised today.  Use your day to bless those around you.

Finally, God has promised to always be with you.  He has promised to give you His strength, His peace, and His comfort in the midst of life’s trials and tribulations.  If you believe this, know that you have faith in Christ and give Him thanks for that faith.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the Will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV)

Here’s something to think about as I wrap up this analysis:  We are all so focused on what’s missing in our lives, that we miss what we already have all around us.

The very first temptation that led Adam and Eve into sin was Satan getting them to focus on what they lacked, making them ignore the abundance they already had.

In the Garden of Eden, God told them: “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.” (Genesis 2:16-17 ESV).

In other words, you literally can’t get more abundant than EVERYTHING for FREE.  But, there was only ONE thing that Adam and Eve lacked.  They had everything they could ever need; they had abundance from God.  And yet, Satan was still able to get their attention off of what they had and onto the one thing they didn’t.

So, instead of focusing of what you want, or what you think you need, or what you think you’re missing, focus on God and the abundance that He provides to you on a daily basis.  And give thanks to God for it all.

I would suggest you sit down and focus on all the blessings you have.  If you do that, you will soon find out – like Schlueter – that you will run out of numbers before you can thank Him for everything.

And then, keep counting your blessings and try to be a blessing to others, so they can add another blessing to their count.

Soli Deo Gloria!
