On the sixth day of Christmas … six geese-a-laying. This day’s gift in the song can stand for the six days of Creation before God’s rest on the seventh day. Just like geese laying eggs to bring forth new life, God brought forth new life for everything from nothing.
All three persons of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) were present before the beginning. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are coequal and coeternal, as the One True, Triune God. “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable.” (Isaiah 40:28 ESV).
God is omnipotent (all-powerful). “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” (Matthew 19:26 ESV). God is omniscient (all-knowing). “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” (Psalm 139:4 ESV). God is omnipresent (present everywhere at the same time). “’Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill heaven and earth?’ declares the Lord.” (Jeremiah 23:24 ESV).
When God created everything, known and unknown, throughout the entire universe, He used only His Words and simply spoke everything into existence. We attribute Creation to God the Father, Redemption with God the Son, and Sanctification with God the Holy Spirit. However, all three persons of the Triune Godhead were present and active in Creation, Redemption, and Sanctification. For example, Jesus is God’s Word incarnate in human flesh; so Jesus was the very Word spoken at Creation that brought life into everything! Look at how marvelous God is and all the work He has done for us!
The full account of Creation revealed to and recorded by Moses, is in Genesis 1:1 to 2:3. The summary of Creation is as follows:
On the first day, God created light and separated it from the darkness and called the light “Day” and the darkness “Night.” On the second day, God created an expanse in the midst of the waters and separated the waters under the expanse from the waters above the expanse and called the expanse “Heaven.” On the third day, God created dry land in the waters under the heavens and called the land “Earth” and the waters “Seas.” God created plants bearing fruit and yielding seed, each to their own kind, on the earth.
On the fourth day, God created the stars to be for signs and seasons and days and years, the Sun to rule over the day, and the Moon (and stars) to rule over the night. On the fifth day, God created all the animals of the seas and sky, each to their own kinds, to be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas and on the earth. On the sixth day, God created all the beasts of the earth, livestock and creeping things, each to their own kind to be fruitful and multiply and fill all the earth.
On the sixth day, God also created man in His image to have dominion over the plants of the earth, the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, and the livestock and creeping things over all the earth. God commanded man to be fruitful and multiply and fill all the earth. God saw that man was “very good.”
On the seventh day, God rested after He finished all the work He had done in Creation and then made the seventh day holy, because He rested and called it the “Sabbath.” God did not need to rest, He rested as an example for us to take Sabbath rest as well. Now that Jesus Christ has already come, died for our sins and rose to new life, He made the Sabbath rest new. We no longer have a designated day for the Sabbath, rather, we are to rest in Jesus, any time and in any place.
“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV).
Soli Deo Gloria!
